New Delhi: A parliamentary committee on Tuesday adopted a report on India's role in the Arctic and Antarctic region, with panel chief Shashi Tharoor underscoring that the polar regions are far more important than people think.

The department-related standing committee on External Affairs heard representations from the Ministry of Earth Sciences, the environment ministry and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) before finalising the draft report.

Tharoor said the report was adopted on Tuesday.

He said the subject is interesting but "rather obscure". He said the polar regions are far more important than people think.

The committee also adopted a report on India-Bangladesh relations, which is based on the observations and recommendations made in an earlier report on which the MEA has responded.

The two reports are likely to be tabled in Parliament in the ongoing Monsoon session.
